Killing the Zombies and Raising the Innovators. – Big Innovation Centre at the UK Political Party Conferences 2013

Big Innovation Centre is excited to host fringe events at the three main political party conferences, again in 2013. This include both parties of the Conservative–Liberal Democrat coalition government as well the party of the opposition, the Labour Party.

Our fringe event title this year is: “Killing the Zombies and Raising the Innovators”

Our event provocation to be considered by the panels:

The 2013 party conference season coincides with the fifth anniversary of the height of the credit crunch and the collapse of Lehman Brothers. Half a decade on, the UK economy is still struggling to create sustainable jobs and growth. We can do more to innovate together.

We see huge opportunities to improve how we support innovation in the UK. Unproductive firms are being kept alive by low interest rates and tolerant lenders, while too many firms with high potential are struggling to find the help they need to grow. This is the very opposite of how a financial system should allocate resources.

The Big Innovation Centre’s party conference events will focus on how the UK can exploit these opportunities to unlock innovation and build around the major disruptive forces of our time.

Issues and questions to consider:

  • What does the UK need for growth and prosperity?
  • How can policymakers support innovation, economic growth and innovative firms?
  • Which are the policies that most enable innovation and should be more supported? Which innovation-driving policies still need implementing?
  • How can we better ensure that firms which deserve financial support receive it?
  • How can universities, businesses and government best work together?
