The STFC is one of the UK's seven publicly funded Research Councils and a leading multi-disciplinary science organisation, with an annual budget approaching £500M.

Much of the work we support is in big, fundamental science, such as particle physics, astronomy, nuclear physics and space science, however we also operate sophisticated research facilities for an extremely wide range of physical sciences, chemistry, environment, energy, engineering, and the medical and life sciences, as well as software and high performance computing development and applications.

Our research seeks to understand the Universe from the largest astronomical scales to the tiniest constituents of matter, and the innovation arising from this research creates practical impact for us all - ranging from cancer treatment to airport security, high-tech jobs to hydrogen-powered cars. STFC is committed to both maintaining research excellence and delivering this impact.

STFC funds the UK's participation in major international science projects including CERN, operates large research facilities on the campuses at SciTech Daresbury (in Cheshire) and at Harwell Oxford, and delivers innovation programmes and business incubators for new technology companies.
