GOOGLE UK

Google's mission is to organise the world's information and make it universally accessible and useful.

The story of Google is just one example of how innovation, powered by the internet, has driven extraordinary growth.

In 1998, two computer science students Larry Page and Sergey Brin created Google. Since then, Google has grown by leaps and bounds. From offering search in a single language we now offer dozens of products and services - including various forms of advertising and web applications for all kinds of tasks - in scores of languages.

Today, Google is one of the world's best-known and most admired brands with a truly global reach. However, the company still strives to keep some of that start-up spirit, with an emphasis throughout the company on sharing ideas and helping innovation to grow.

Why Google is supporting the Big Innovation Centre

"Google is pleased to support the Big Innovation Centre.

Innovation matters. It matters to Google as a company, but it also matters to Britain as a country. The number one challenge in Britain today is to drive growth and there is no better engine for growth than innovation.

If you look at where growth has come from over the last few years, it has been from a small group of innovative companies. Half of all jobs in the UK were created by just one in 20 companies. What they had in common was that they were small and highly innovative.

These highly innovative small businesses are in turn being powered by the new internet economy. Smaller companies online have grown over four times faster than those offline. Such is the pace and scale of this growth in the UK that we lead the world on e-commerce: the internet economy now accounts for over 7% of UK GDP and has the potential to grow to over 10% of GDP by 2015.

The Big Innovation Centre has a great role to play in bringing together a range of businesses, academics, researchers and policy makers to seed innovation both online and offline and help the economy grow."
