Big Innovation Centre THOUGHT LEADER: THE INTERNET

Inventor of the Internet and Google's Chief Internet Evangelist, California

For the Thought Leadership meeting on March 10th 2015, Vint Cerf's reflexion:

On the social inclusion of new business models

“I think it’s also important for you to keep in mind the other side effect of innovation and that’s in economics – driving the cost of things down makes it possible for a larger swath of the world’s population to get access to these technologies to make use of them and to invent new ways of using them. So we benefit ourselves by innovating in that space, in the economics space, in addition to the purely technological space.”

Realizing the vision of Big Data

“I am really quite interested in the topics you will be discussing. Certainly, among them is big data produced by an increasing number of devices that are part of what we call the internet of things. These range from appliances at home, at work, in the car and things that we wear on our person, but also to sensor networks that are capturing data from the natural environment from structures that we live and work in, from automobiles. All kinds of data, in fact, could be applied to help us predict the future better, to help us manage our resources better, help us deal with congestion in cities and transportation systems, to help us plan our agricultural efforts, maybe even to respond to some of the side effects of global warming. All of these things, of course, will materialise only if it turns out that we have adequate algorithms for processing all of that data, helping us understand it more deeply.”
