Yesterday some of the leading lights of Britain’s creative industries gathered at the Big Innovation Centre for what was a lively and energetic meeting of an extended group whose membership centred on members of the UK Creative Industries Council (CIC) and representatives of the Big Innovation Centre sponsor group.
The CIC is an industry-led forum bringing together the creative industries and government. It aims to articulate what barriers are facing the industry and point towards areas where the government can help growth in the sector through policy. Research initiated by the Council is currently looking into the areas of access to finance for creative businesses, and the creative industries skills agenda, with business model change and growth a key area for 2012.
This meeting, convened as part of CIC member and Google Northern Europe VP Matt Brittin’s contribution to the work of the CIC, saw constructive debate on the issue of growth through new digital business model innovation – within large corporations, public private partnerships, and SMEs. The debate was prompted by short presentation from key figures, with break-out workshops providing a full and frank thrashing out of related ideas followed by a drawing together of key recommendations to government from the meeting.
The creative industries are an extremely important, fruitful and world-leading sector in the UK economy, encompassing activities and businesses as varied as advertising, videogames and museums and other cultural institutions, and The Work Foundation has long been an authoritative provider of research on the sector, through its Creative Industries Programme. While the Creative Industries currently have a great opportunity for growth in the UK, with the rise of the internet and a strong creative skills base, they also face a perfect storm of coalescing barriers to achieving this.
Fora such as the Creative Industries Council present an excellent medium for figures across the sector to exchange ideas and experiences, in order to provide robust and relevant recommendations to policymakers on what the sector needs to fulfil its potential, and The Big Innovation Centre and Work Foundation welcome the opportunity to facilitate this.
